You can list your pet at http://disaster.petfinder.com/emergency/ in the “My Pets Need Help” section. Please know that this particular section of AERN is passive. This means there is no guarantee that anyone will respond to your request for help. If you need help urgently, contact a veterinarian or an animal shelter immediately. It is also important to recognize that AERN is a very busy site, so you may receive too many offers of support.
Rescue requests are being reviewed and answered, when possible, by trained and authorized rescue workers in various locations throughout the United States. If you email or call the number associated with a particular pet, you will be contacting the person or organization who is temporarily caring for the pet or, if the pet’s location is unknown or it is in transit, you may be communicating with a staff or volunteer of AERN or one of the national animal welfare groups. In some cases, like foster requests, you may be speaking with an individual. As always, use caution and follow your gut instincts when dealing with private individuals – you are under no obligation to accept their assistance.
Contact information associated with rescued pets may be different for each pet. It may represent hundreds of different organizations and individuals responding to the disaster. Due to the high volume of inquiries during a disaster and to the diversity of organizations in animal welfare, not every request will be immediately attended to. For this reason, any email that is sent regarding an individual pet is logged in the AERN system and attached permanently to that pet’s record. This way, weeks later, a foster mom can review all the email sent about a pet she may be caring for.
